ALB TV: How firms spot talent in lawyers

ALB asked partners, HR and recruitment staff the questions job seekers all want to know – How do firms spot talent?

Corrs Chambers Westgarth partner Andrew Korbel says that while outstanding academics and demonstrated technical skills are essential, the ability to build relationships with clients as well as peers is what makes a good lawyer. “What we look for beyond [academics and technical skills] is relationships – the ability to build and maintain relationships,” he said.

While academics and team and interpersonal skills were top of the list for many firms, including Minter Ellison, Gilbert + Tobin and Mallesons, Freehills’ Gareth Bennett says having a commercial mind is key. “We’re looking for fantastic lawyers, but also people who are also fantastically interested in business as well, and looking to provide commercially astute solutions for our clients,” he said.
