Australian firms face lawyer shortage

Aussie law firms are already finding it hard to fill vacancies, and may have to start trying to recruit from overseas.

Laurence Simons Sydney branch manager Ruth Salamon told ALB that “ there are an incredible number of roles out there for solid mid-tier lawyers” in a market she generally describes as “booming”, only hampered at the moment by the lack of candidates.

Salamon said the vast majority of new roles are coming from the mid-tier sector, up to and including the biggest national mid-tier players sitting below the six top tier firms.

Though there are jobs available across the board, candidates in high demand are those in the corporate space, with experience in equity capital markets and public M&A, as well as private M&A, private equity, and general corporate advisory.

Despite the continued global financial turmoil in Europe, Salamon said demand for corporate lawyers is followed closely by a need for finance lawyers.
